Violence is on the rise in Grand Rapids
Editorial by Luis Molina / El Informador
The city of Grand Rapids, Michigan, is considered to be one of the best cities where to live and raise children, as it has been listed as a quiet city for many years, however, everyday things are being painted differently. The reality is that we cannot cover the sun with a finger and sadly, in recent months, and in particular this week, our city has been plagued with crimes where some of our citizens are no longer with us.
In certain areas of the city we must exercise great care since the neighborhoods are not as safe as we think and, although it is true that we cannot compare this city with cities full of crimes, as an example, Chicago, but it is good for us to be careful of where and to what places we frequent.
It is of utmost importance, more than ever, to speak to and educate our children to avoid these dangerous neighborhoods, but, more than anything, to teach them the consequences of associating with people who are involved in gangs, crimes, drugs and other things that, at the end of the day, leave nothing but pain and suffering.
Bad company only spoils what you, as a parent, have formed and created in your home. Do not let other young people with nothing to do, come to spoil what, with so much work and sacrifice, you have formed.
As parents, we have a great responsibility to inculcate and educate our children with good principles and values so that in adolescence they are young people of benefit. Sadly, today the prisons are full of young people who, for not thinking about the consequences, have gotten into tremendous problems. As parents, it is too late to help them. The time is now, and particularly for the little ones, as they need of our time, but quality time.
It is sad, but studies have revealed that parents now devote, on average, 8 minutes of daily quality time for their children, then sadly we go around complaining about the actions of our children. We should not delegate our responsibility to the babysitter, but even the nanny of many children is the monster of an eye; «Television». And what does television teach them? Mostly violence, immorality, drugs … and the list is long.
Every week we publish news of great pain and sadness where young people ruin their lives and get into serious problems with the law. Let’s not look at these things as one more story, let’s act now and help our children become mature and righteous as they grow.
Many parents make the mistake of saying, «I do not want my child to feel pressured.» Well, one thing you can be sure of: if you, as a parent, do not push them to be good children, be sure that their friends and street criminals will pressure them to do things that later we will regret for not instilling good values.
Do not let the next bad news be of one of our children, let us do something about the matter starting now.
