ROCKFORD, MI (ELIN) – La Policía Estatal de Michigan y el Fiscal del Condado de Ingham han determinado que un oficial de la policía de Grand Rapids estaba justificado en dispararle a un sospechoso que era buscado por apuñalar a una mujer e intentar de robar su automóvil en un estacionamiento de Meijer.
Víctor González fue baleado por el oficial Tim Orent la mañana del 11 de marzo en el bloque 600 de la calle Bridge, mientras la policía intentaba arrestarlo.
González estaba en libertad condicional por llevar un arma oculta y asalto criminal. Fue buscado por intentar de robarle el auto con violencia a una mujer de 25 años en el Meijer de la avenida Alpine. La policía dijo que, durante el intento, González ató las muñecas de la mujer, la amenazó y luego la apuñaló mientras trataba de huir. La policía también dice que González atacó a un buen samaritano con un martillo cuando trató de intervenir por la mujer.
La policía de Grand Rapids encontró a González el 11 de marzo en el Steel Cat Bar de Bridge Street a las 9:00 de la madrugada. Él huyó cuando la policía intentó hacer un arresto. La policía usó un Taser sobre González, pero no tuvo efecto.
González huyó a un edificio cercano que estaba en construcción. Un perro policía acorraló a González en un sub sótano y luego agarró su pierna izquierda cuando González emergió para subir las escaleras a la policía. González entonces trató de tirar a otro oficial por las escaleras y estaba sobre el oficial cuando Orent le disparó tres veces en la espalda baja y cada brazo.
El fiscal del condado de Ingham determinó el martes, que los oficiales estaban dentro de su derecho de usar fuerza razonable para hacer un arresto y que la fuerza mortal habría estado justificada en la protección del otro oficial.
El fiscal del condado de Ingham investigó el caso debido a un conflicto de intereses con el fiscal del condado de Kent.
González actualmente se encuentra en la cárcel del condado de Kent en la espera de su juicio.
ROCKFORD, Mich. — Michigan State Police and the Ingham County Prosecutor have determined a Grand Rapids police officer was justified in shooting a suspect who was wanted for stabbing a woman and attempting to steal her car in a Meijer parking lot.
Victor Gonzalez was shot by Officer Tim Orent the morning of March 11 in the 600 block of Bridge Street while police were attempting to arrest him.
Gonzalez was on parole for carrying a concealed weapon and felonious assault. He was wanted for attempting to carjack a 25-year-old woman at the Meijer on Alpine Avenue. Police say during the attempt, Gonzalez bound the woman’s wrists, threatened her, and then stabbed her as she tried to run away. Police also say Gonzalez attacked a good Samaritan with a hammer when he tried to intervene for the woman.
Grand Rapids police found Gonzalez on March 11 at the Steel Cat Bar on Bridge Street at about 9:00 a.m. He fled when police attempted to make an arrest. Police used a taser on Gonzalez, but it had no effect.
Gonzalez fled into a nearby building that was under construction. A K9 cornered Gonzalez in a crawl space and then grabbed his left leg when Gonzalez emerged to go up stairs to police. Gonzalez then tried to pull another officer down the stairs and was on top of the officer when Orent shot him three times in the lower back and each arm.
The Ingham County Prosecutor determined on Tuesday the officers were within their right to use reasonable force to make an arrest and that deadly force would’ve been justified in protecting the other officer.
The Ingham County Prosecutor investigated the case due to a conflict of interest with the Kent County Prosecutor.
Gonzalez is currently in the Kent County jail awaiting trial.
