¿Alguna vez ha sido usted, o un miembro de su familia víctima de un acto de violencia? ¿Teme que le vaya a ocurrir? Se dice que la violencia “es un problema de salud pública fundamental y creciente en todo el mundo”, y se cree que en Estados Unidos hay más de treinta mil bandas y pandillas violentas que están activas.
Es muy triste y lamentable, pero cada día escuchamos de más y más actos violentos, entre ellos tiroteos, los cuales ocurren en diferentes partes de nuestra propia ciudad, lo que nos deja ver que el crimen y la violencia van en aumento. Esto hace que cada día las personas se sientan menos seguras, aun estando dentro de sus hogares.
Las últimas semanas, la policía de Grand Rapids, Wyoming y otras ciudades, están preocupados por la cantidad de tiroteos y muertes que están ocurriendo en nuestra comunidad.
Y lo preocupante de todo esto es que muchas veces estos tiros pueden alcanzar a personas que, ni siquiera tienen nada que ver con lo que está sucediendo. Esto es una de las razones por las que muchas familias se sienten más inseguras que en años pasados, y claro, con toda razón, ya que, a solo días del cierre de esta edición, algunos hogares han sido víctimas de la delincuencia donde personas han balaceado tales hogares. Aunque en algunos de los casos nadie ha resultado herido, no siempre va a hacer así. Por supuesto, ya no pueden vivir tranquilas ni en su propio hogar pensando en que les vuelva a suceder lo mismo.
Esa es una razón por la que la policía a veces tiene que actuar con mano dura con delincuentes y con personas que hacen tales cosas, ya que el simple hecho de que personas carguen con armas, no con fines propios, es en sí un gran peligro. Ahí es donde esperamos que las autoridades actúen con acción y firmeza en contra de tales personas.
Cada uno, como ciudadano, tenemos el deber y una responsabilidad para con nuestro prójimo y no debemos permitir, ni dejar pasar por alto, cuando sepamos de ciertas personas que pueden ser un peligro para nuestras familias. Tenemos que denunciarlas a la policía, así nuestras familias estarán más seguras.
Pero, hay una cosa más que podemos hacer como comunidad. Debemos fomentar la paz comenzando en nuestro hogar con nuestra familia, enseñemos a nuestros hijos amor y respeto al prójimo, no les compremos videojuegos violentos ya que estos lo único que logran es insensibilizarles su mente y su corazón hacia la violencia. Pero eso no es todo, sin duda, para solucionar, por lo menos un poco el problema de la violencia, hay que involucrar a la demás gente. ¿Cómo?, pues saludando, siendo amables y respetuosos. No nos olvidemos del dicho, “El respeto al derecho ajeno es la paz del mundo”. Sí, tal vez no cambiemos al mundo, pero con nuestro granito de arena tendremos un poco de paz.
Shootings, our daily bread

Have you ever been, or a member of your family, the victim of an act of violence? Are you afraid it will happen to you? Violence is said to be «a fundamental and growing public health problem worldwide,» and it is believed that in the United States there are more than thirty thousand violent gangs that are active.
It is very sad and regrettable, but every day we hear more and more of violent acts, including shootings, which occur in different parts of our own city, which shows us that crime and violence are increasing. This makes people feel less secure every day, even when they are inside their homes.
In recent weeks, the police in Grand Rapids, Wyoming, and other cities, are concerned about the number of shootings and deaths that are occurring in our community.
And the worrying thing about all this is that many times these bullets can reach people who have nothing to do with what is happening. This is one of the reasons why many families feel more insecure than in previous years, and rightly so, of course, since just days after the closing of this edition, some homes have been victims of crimes where people have shot said homes. Although in some cases no one has been injured, it will not always be so. Of course, they can no longer live quietly in their own home thinking that the same thing will happen to them again.
That is one reason why sometimes the police have to work hard with criminals and people doing such things, since the mere fact that people carry weapons, not for their own ends, is in itself a great danger. That is where we expect the authorities to act with action and firmness against such people.
Each one, as a citizen, has a duty and a responsibility to our neighbors and we should not allow or overlook, when we know of certain people that can be a danger to our families. We must report them to the police, so our families will be safer.
But, there is one more thing we can do as a community. We should encourage peace by starting at home with our family, teaching our children love and respect for our neighbor, not buying violent video games because they are only trying to numb their minds and hearts toward violence. But that is not all, without a doubt. To solve, at least, a little the problem of violence, you have to involve other people. How? Well, greeting, being kind and respectful. Let us not forget the saying, «Respect for the rights of others is the peace of the world.» Yes, we may not change the world, but with our grain of sand we will have some peace.
