It takes more than eliminating weapons
Editorial by Luis Molina
It is unfortunate how shootings have become the bread of every day and how easy it is to acquire a weapon; it is almost like going to the store to buy tortillas. Today, thousands of people are armed or have weapons in their homes.
When these tragedies occur, gun makers are mostly blamed, however, we have to point out that a weapon does not fire itself, so it takes a person with bad motives to carry out a crime or crimes like what happened in Las Vegas this week.
Many believe that they should put a stop to the sales of arms, however, the problem goes much further. The real problem has to be eradicated from the roots. For this to happen you must reform people; people who have better motives, love of neighbor, wanting to do good to all. If such qualities were possessed by people, even if there were all the weapons of the world, no one would use them to take the life of their fellow man.
When these tragedies occur, one cannot blame only those who designed and built such a weapon, but also the person who, with treachery and advantage, planned and plotted how to carry out such a massacre. As we see, all this goes beyond having a weapon, it involves the bad characteristics and the bad heart of the people, because they will always find the way to do evil and with what to do it.
We are sure that these types of people would carry out their macabre plans to take other people’s lives even if there were no weapons. They would look for ways to do evil with, or without weapons. So, the real and biggest problem is not weapons, but people with evil in their mind and heart. We can be sure that, if those qualities are not eradicated from the human being, the problems will continue, because the real problem … they carry inside.
